Reading from the Ears Up: Reader/Listener Appeal of the Audio Book
The legacy of storytellers and storytelling is incalculable; from traveling minstrels to senachai, Scheherazade to Hans Andersen to Shelley Berman. People have always eagerly opened their ears to hear a tale well told. Whether it’s children gathered for a library story time, teens participating in a poetry slam, or adults laughing at a ribald comedian, the act of listening provides a special connection to the material that is very different from the connection formed between reader and book. Reader/listeners no longer have analog feelings about digital collections, particularly audio books. The demand for audio books is growing in libraries and bookstores. New genres and types of audio books are emerging and a new vocabulary to describe them is being coined. Be introduced to the new types of audio book listening experiences, understand the appeal and preference listeners have for various genres and types of audio books, and experience an innovative audio book narrative-appeal vocabulary created by readers’ advisory libraries and in current use by NoveList, the readers’ database. Using sound clips, attendees will experience the different types of audio books available and understand the vocabulary necessary to describe these emerging reading/listening formats.
